Independent guide — not SARS and not the official SARS website. Official site: sars.gov.za

About Us

SA Tax Guide was built for one job: to make SARS easier to understand. SARS handles tax and customs for South Africa, and its processes can feel heavy — forms, deadlines, notices, and online accounts that all use their own language. This site turns those processes into plain, step-by-step explanations, so you know what a task is, what it needs, and where to do it officially.

What this site does

Each guide on this site takes a single SARS task and explains it from start to finish. It covers who the task applies to, what you need before you start, the steps in order, the mistakes people usually make, and what to do when something goes wrong. The homepage overview ties the tasks together, and eight calculators and checkers on the homepage help you estimate a figure or check a position before you act — always labelled as estimates or guidance only, never as an official result.

What this site is not

SA Tax Guide is not SARS, is not connected to SARS, and cannot open, change, or check your tax record. It cannot file a return for you, release a refund, or speak to SARS on your behalf. Every official step still happens on sars.gov.za, in eFiling, on the SARS MobiApp, or at a SARS branch. Where a guide points to an official channel, that is the place to complete the task — this site only explains how to get there prepared.

Who the guides are written for

The guides are written for people dealing with SARS in everyday life: employees whose tax comes off through PAYE, freelancers and small-business owners, employers, and anyone who needs a tax number, a return, a refund, or time to pay. You do not need tax training to follow them. Technical terms are explained the first time they appear, and each guide keeps to the task it promises — no unrelated detail, no jargon for its own sake.

What you will find here

How to use this site

Start with the homepage overview if you are new to SARS, or go straight to the guide for your task if you already know what you need. Read the “what to have ready” part first, then follow the steps in order. If a figure matters — a refund, a debt, or a tax amount — use a homepage tool for an estimate, then confirm the official figure through an official SARS channel before you rely on it.
